During the Opium wars, which disrupted the tea trade between Britain and China, the British experimented with growing the tea plant themselves in new regions. Assam, in North East India was a region that proved to be a very successful, particularly when they discovered that a variant of the tea plant was already growing wild in Assam - the Camellia Sinensis Assamica - as this varietal grew much more successfully.
