Here at Debonair Tea, we’re huge ginger lovers and seem to consume vast amounts of the stuff (fresh, ground, stem) in our tea and our food.
We’ve always known it makes us feel good but we’ve recently had our eyes opened to the fact that, from a health credentials point of view, ginger really is the original “super spice”.
It’s official; ginger, which has the fantastic scientific name of Zingiber Officinale, is one of the healthiest spices on the planet. It contains Gingerol, one of the substances that gives it its flavour and its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
This means that it is often used as a relief for exercise-induced muscle pain, the symptoms of osteoarthritis and menstrual discomfort. It has also been shown to protect from infection, and, as a diaphoretic, the consumption of ginger encourages perspiration, so it can be used in feverish conditions such as flu or colds.
As well as a treatment for nausea, and especially morning sickness, ginger is also used to treat chronic indigestion, with ginger being shown to speed up emptying of the stomach in people with this condition. If you too want to indulge in the benefits of this wonder spice, ginger features in a couple of our current blends – Juicy Ginger and Masala Chai – both are equally delicious.
